Uganda, known as the pearl of Africa, is where we believe God is calling us to adopt. Our hearts are drawn to this beautiful East African country that is struggling to overcome and rebuild after years of war. War, poverty, and the vicious HIV virus have left many children orphaned on the streets or in institutionalized orphanages, in need of families. With our years in Africa and our deep love for her people, coupled with the number of orphans, our hearts have been broken. The call and longing is undeniable.
For those of you wondering what agency we are working with … after LOTS and LOTS of research and prayer over the years, we have chosen Holt International as our agency to partner with in bringing our children home. Holt brings 50+ years of international adoption experience and, most importantly, its philosophy of adoption aligns the best with ours. Although God has heavily placed adoption on our hearts, we strongly believe that adoption must be the BEST choice for our children. This means that all other options must be considered and exhausted, such as extended family or village community and local foster care. We believe it is always best for children to remain in their birth family and birth country when at all possible.
It was also important to us to partner with an agency who is actively working alongside the country to improve processes and conditions for orphan care and family preservation, resulting in less reliance on international adoption. Holt is working with a local NGO in Uganda whose mission is child advocacy/ family preservation and establishing in-country fostering and adoption. They provide child counseling, teaching, and life skills for self-sustainment. Holt is also currently working with the Ugandan government in establishing ethical adoption standards, as international adoption is still fairly new in Uganda. We are excited to play a part in supporting this!
